The capture of Sevastopol was the last serious victory of the German army in World War II. The operation was designed and then successfully carried out by General Erich von Manstein. Using a combination of daring infantry attacks and the power of heavy artillery, von Manstein managed to crush the most powerful Soviet fortifications around the port of Sevastopol.
