In Russia, the history of the great battle in the Carpathians, which went from September 1914 to May 1915, has not yet been written, and therefore the episodes of that campaign of the First World War, glorious for the Russian armed forces, remain unknown. One of them is the struggle for Mount Makovka - height 958 in the Skole Beskids, where, along with other units of the Austro-Hungarian army, the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (OSS) fought against the Russian troops. For many decades, Galician nationalists glorified the imaginary victory of the OSS Legion on Makovka. But in fact, the battles for this mountain ended in an outstanding victory for the Russian troops. On April 21 (May 4), 1915, multi-tier fortified enemy positions at an altitude of 958, equipped with the latest military equipment, fell under the onslaught of Russian infantry. The monograph of the historian Vasily Kashirin is a detailed study of the struggle for Makovka, the events of which are inscribed in the operational-strategic context of hostilities in the Carpathians in the winter and spring of 1915. The book is based on materials from the Russian State Military Historical Archive, most of which had not previously been touched by the hand of a researcher.
