The modern life we observe around us, says Sacchetti in the preface to his book, is full of sad events; plague, death, internal and external wars, impoverishment of peoples and families - all this leads to the fact that people are looking for laughter. Such is the nature of man, such is the nature of him, the writer, prompting him to write so that "laughter is mixed with such frequent facts of grief." The collection of short stories was the last stage of his literary path. Sacchetti was not a professional writer, and the book mattered less to him than personal experience. Novellas were the kind of work that kept his name from oblivion and gave him a place among writers who continue to be read and translated in modern times. Selected novels by Sacchetti (c. 1330-1400) were translated into Russian several times.
