Sparta, or Lacedaemon, occupied the southern part of the large Peloponnesian Peninsula, which is the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. Only a very narrow isthmus, a dozen kilometers wide, connects the Peloponnese with Central Greece and the rest of the Balkan Peninsula. The peloponnese in its separate parts is a system of closed and difficult to access mountain valleys formed by the intersection of steep and high mountain ranges; such are the mountainous regions of the central part of the peninsula, its northern coasts, partly the eastern coast. The geographical conditions of the Laconian Valley and the Peloponnese created an unfavorable environment for the rapid development of productive forces and hindered the development of a slave-owning society. Here, patriarchal-tribal relations remained longer than in other centers of Greece. The extreme slowness of development led to those peculiar features of the socio-political system of Sparta, which we will continue to study.
