Osip-Julian Ivanovich Senkovsky (J? zef Julian S? kowski; 1800-1858) - Russian writer, journalist, orientalist. Corresponding Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1828). Born in an old Polish gentry family. He graduated from Vilnius University (1819), after which he traveled to the East. He brilliantly studied many oriental languages; in 1822-1847 professor at St. Petersburg University; one of the founders of Russian oriental studies. In 1834-1847 (nominally until 1856), the editor of the journal Library for Reading, in which he published his stories ("oriental," secular, everyday, satirical, scientific and philosophical), feuilleton, articles under the pseudonym Baron Brambeus. Possessing literary talent, erudition, ease of syllable, Senkovsky, however, did not create anything durable in fiction.
