In 1851-53, Tolstoy in the Caucasus participated in hostilities (first as a volunteer, then as an artillery officer), and in 1854 he went to the Danube Army. Soon after the outbreak of the Crimean War, he was transferred to Sevastopol at his personal request (in the besieged city he fights on the famous 4th bastion).
