In 1882, D. Rovinsky published the book "Reliable Portraits of Moscow Sovereigns: Ivan III, Vasily Ivanovich and Ivan IV the Terrible - and the Embassy of Their Time." This study was the first department undertaken by the author of Russian iconography. It was to be followed by other departments. Quite a lot of materials have accumulated for each of these departments, but nevertheless there were still significant gaps that did not allow starting a systematic publication. But since lovers and collectors of antiquity insisted on publishing, the author began preliminary publication of the photographs he collected under the general title "Materials for Russian Iconography." These materials included portraits, views, historical and household sheets, sheets made for the history of Russian engraving, the work of silver engravers, as well as prints from original ancient copper boards. All pictures, with few exceptions, are taken in one measure with the originals.
