Jaro does not remember his past - a child dying of beatings, he was found while on another planet, and adopted by a childless married couple of researchers from the institute on Thanet, but the growing Jaro cannot feel like his own person in Thanet's society, where everything is subordinated to the desire to acquire high status. His adoptive parents are killed in an explosion by a megalomaniacal terrorist, and Jaro Fat goes in search of his true origin - he has to overcome many dangers in a world lost on the edge of the Galaxy, and plunge into the forbidden depths of the past.
