The book tells about the struggle of German anti-fascists during the war. In the center of the story is the difficult fate of the young man Rudolf Scherer, hiding under the name of Walter Zang, one of the fighters of the invisible Resistance front. Workers and burghers, the rulers of the Third Reich and its "theorists," small shopkeepers, soldiers and policemen - such is the wide "periphery" of the novel.
