These were not just robbers who came and went, but winners who created slave states in the occupied territories in territories and populations that were not inferior to the Roman Empire during its heyday. In the intervals between the destruction of the state of some conquerors and the arrival of the next for sometimes many decades, the freed slaves created new ethnic groups, which the Greeks and Romans called sklavins.
