The study of the mounds of the Pazyryk culture on the Ukok plateau was started in 1990. This is one of the "highest" areas of Gorny Altai, where archaeological sites have been recorded. The first excavated medium-sized mound (kurg. 1 burial ground Ak-Alakh I) was with a "frozen" grave.
