In the late 1860s he graduated from the natural faculty of Moscow University. In the 1870s he edited the magazine "Knowledge," and, after its closure, "Word." He published a number of valuable translations: Taylor, "Primitive Culture" (St. Petersburg, 1872); Lebbock, "The Beginning of Civilization" (St. Petersburg, 1876), etc.
