This book, first published in Leipzig in 1884 in two volumes and modestly named by the author "From Siberia: Diary Pages," is by its nature an encyclopedic collection of materials about the Turkic peoples of Russia and some surrounding countries. Of particular value to the book is the fact that most of them were obtained by the author himself as a result of many years of scientific expeditions, in which he acted not only as a pioneer traveler, but also as a deep, qualified research scientist who collected and independently comprehended gigantic factual material.
