The work of A. Besanson is an attempt to establish or at least approach an understanding of the Russian national character on the basis of materials that are at the disposal of the historian. The book considers not so much the historical reality recorded in the sources as its perception by contemporaries and descendants. The focus is on the attitude of popular or national consciousness towards God and power, and the change in this attitude from the era of the Grand Dukes to the beginning of the 20th century. The last section of the book is devoted to the refraction and embodiment that the attitude towards the Father, the Sovereign and God received in Russian pre-revolutionary literature, using the example of Pushkin, Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky, Blok.
