Samarkand is a city of legends. Here, every stone, ravine or pond is a living legend of the past, every ancient monument is a witness to real or imagined events, every old tree is associated with some parable, every quarter of the city (guzar or mahalla) keeps its own legend as a pedigree. Sometimes these legends fuse together and form cycles. This brochure discusses the formation of the Guzars of Samarkand, the main images of the 18-20 centuries.
