The Great Northern War lasted more than twenty years - from 1700 to 1721. Its result was the transformation of Sweden into a secondary power and the emergence of the Russian Empire with the capital St. Petersburg. But few people think that the Northern War was just an episode - albeit the bloodiest - of the almost seven hundred-year confrontation between the Russians and the Swedes.
