In the Middle Ages, castles, fortresses and other fortified structures shared a common feature of the European landscape. Despite the shortcomings of construction equipment and labor, medieval fortifications were built taking into account new political circumstances and military technologies. This book is an illustrated guide to the architecture of medieval fortifications, down to the fortresses and fortified cities of the 15th and 16th centuries. In hundreds of detailed and meticulous drawings, the artist Jean-Denis G. Lepage introduces the reader to a heterogeneous group of buildings whose unique characteristics show the development and diversity of European medieval military architecture. Each drawing is accompanied by detailed text describing the type of buildings (for example, the castle of Moat-et-Bailey) and the features of castles and cities (Mont Saint-Michel, Jerusalem). Elements of medieval military equipment and weapons are also shown in drawings accompanied by text.
