Although most gladiators were slaves who fought and died in the amusement of the crowd, many were able to raise their status and their lives with victories in the arena to become as popular as superstar athletes today. Gladiators came out of all spheres of Roman society, from slaves and prisoners who were forced to fight to volunteers who liked the opportunity to test their combat skills.
