Japan's self-isolation led to the fact that humanity began to get acquainted with the folklore of this country only in the 19th century. In Russia, Leo Tolstoy drew attention to the Japanese fairy tale, compiling books for public reading. Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak did a lot to popularize Japanese fairy tales, compiling and publishing wonderful collections of these fairy tales. These days, their selection of Japanese fairy tales is enormous. With all this abundance and variety, a collection of 12 fairy tales, illustrated by the most talented Kirill Chelushkin, and published in 1994, stands apart.
