About two and a half thousand years ago, a person had a brilliant guess that the whole world around him consists of the smallest particles. One of the first to make this assumption was the Greek philosopher Democritus, who lived five centuries before our reckoning. Democritus considered these smallest particles indivisible and therefore called them atoms (atom - in Greek - indivisible).
