Fayum portrait is a very significant phenomenon not only in the development of ancient Eastern and ancient art culture, but also in the development of all world art. Fayum portraits are essentially the earliest examples of easel portraits in the world history of painting. But this does not in any way exhaust their historical role. No less important is the fact that Fayum portraits to a certain extent compensate for the disappeared samples of ancient Greek painting.
