The book is a description of the life and scientific activities of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Pavel Vasilyevich Shmakov, a pioneer of television technology, who led the creation of the first mechanical television equipment in our country, on which low-line television broadcasting began in 1931. P.V. Shmakov (co-authored with P.V. Timofeev) is the inventor of the transmitting television tube, which determined one of the qualitative stages in the development of television in the 40s and 50s. The team under his leadership created the first color television system in our country, compatible with the monochrome TV broadcasting system operating at that time, developed a stereoscopic television system and a number of applied TV devices. From 1937 until the end of his life, P.V. Shmakov headed the department of television he created at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute of Communications (now the State University of Telecommunications), where for the first time in our country the training of specialists for the production and operation of TV broadcasting equipment began.
