Among the great many books about Christ, this one occupies a special place. The monograph is entirely devoted to the study of the circumstances of the birth and death of Christ, woven into the historical picture of Judea at the turn of the New Era. The very fact of generalizing such material deserves respect, but the value of the book, of course, is not only in this. Dates and references to sources are only material that needs the penetration of the author's creative consciousness. The reader conducts the whole search, all the multifaceted research with him and never ceases to be surprised. The trivial, painfully familiar date of Christ's birth in 1 C.E. and death at age 33 are pushed back by 6 years. Jesus was crucified in 27, this book says, and was probably born in 7 BC. e. To believe or not to believe the search for the author and his evidence is a personal matter.
