The novel covers the forty-year period of Russian history of the second half of the 13th century. (1263-1304) and tells about the struggle for power of the sons of Alexander Nevsky - Dmitry and Andrei, about the relationship of Russia with the Horde, about the creation by the youngest son of Nevsky Daniel of the Moscow principality as the center of the subsequent unification of the country.
