The origins of the Polish Sejm date back to the Middle Ages and are associated with the evolution of the estate system. In the XIV-XV centuries, the estates - mainly the gentry - acquired general privileges, the regulations of which determined at the same time the boundaries of the power of the monarch. Restrictions fixed by the privileges of the estate rights of the gentry, the monarch could only achieve the consent of the most interested. In the period before the emergence of the united Polish state, feudal zemstvo assemblies were convened, serving as a council to the prince. When the center of power arose, general congresses began to be convened for the whole country.
