Throughout history, the best shooters in any military force have been used as shooters or snipers and equipped with the best weapons available. German states pioneered the use of snipers on the battlefield during the Seven Years' War in the 18th century. Some of these talented riflemen were then used as mercenaries in America, where tactical use of the rifle in a wooded area was valued.
