The book develops the ideas of Gibbs and Poincaré on the thermal equilibrium of mechanical systems. Although Gibbs' ideas are widely known, many of the problems he posed are still unresolved. On the contrary, Poincaré's deep results on kinetics turned out to be unclaimed and generally unknown to specialists in statistical mechanics.
