Ghosts live not only in England. From ancient times, Russian cemeteries were inhabited by the dead, who were not inferior in color to the Celtic and Norman monsters. At the end of the 18th century, with the awakening of interest in Western European mysticism, decent noble spirits were added to the terrible folk ghosts. Monasticism and the white clergy had their own views on posthumous visits. Under the influence of these ideological movements, a complex of legends about Russian ghosts was formed: village and city folklore, pre-revolutionary prose and poetry, spiritual journalism. Many legends vary the plots familiar to us from England, subordinating the world of spirits to moral principles, secular etiquette, personal feelings, political passions. But many are so rich in content that the British would envy them: living monuments, underground passages, curses of architects, unclean places, the horrors of the Looking Glass, etc.
