The Convair strategic bomber YB-60 Consolidated Walty Aircraft (Convair) YB-36G, developed in 1950, was a low-cost redesign of the Convair B-36F strategic bomber. The new design, which was subsequently renamed YB-60 in 1951, had a new swept wing and was equipped with eight turbojet engines in a similar design to the competing Boeing XBYB-52 bomber. Despite the lack of official competition, the YB-60 turned out to be in direct comparison with the smaller, more versatile Boing aircraft, the latter of which showed much better flight characteristics than the YB-60 in the most important aspects, including a higher speed of 160 kmh. The competing Boeing B-52 entered production in several variants, culminating in the B-52H with a turbofan engine that continues to operate in the second decade of the 21st century, more than sixty years after the first flight of the YB-60 and prototype YB-52 in April 1952.
