The book successfully solved the seemingly insoluble problem: to give at the same time a brief and meaningful introduction to algebraic geometry in the language of schemes. For each of the abstract concepts introduced in the book, D. Mumford provides geometric motivations and, moreover, helps the reader to develop the geometric intuition necessary to handle such difficult concepts as flatness or normality.
