Lake Baikal is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world. The phenomena that created the huge depressions of Lake Baikal have epic proportions; the biological world inhabiting it is rich and extremely unique; the hydropower resources of the tributaries of Lake Baikal and the Angara River flowing from it are enormous. Therefore, it is quite clear that not only Russia and the USSR, but also world science has long shown a deep interest in this lake and the countries surrounding it.
