The Latin poetry of Erasmus (only 7 of his 136 poems are written in Greek) covers more than 50 years in the life of the great humanist. Erasmus is the pinnacle of humanism, but the ideal of poetry for him, as he himself defined it, is "scholarly and sacred poetry." And this explains a lot in his poetic work. The little book "Kisses" appeared in a brief historical interval between the verbose harmony of the Renaissance and the verbose disharmony of the Baroque. This gave her that liveliness, lightness and freshness that make her one of the best examples of Latin poetry of modern times.
