Book 1. Naples and Rome. The streets are almost empty, and the spectacle is majestic and sad, like Piranesi etchings. Very little light; it is exactly as long as it takes to show large outlines and remove darkness. Dirt, dilapidation, bad smells - everything disappeared. The moon shines in a cloudless sky, and fresh air, silence, the interest of novelty - everything excites and excites. It's grand: here's an impression that resumes all the time. Nothing small, ordinary or flat: there is no street or building that would not have its own physiognomy - distinct and bright. No oppressive general rule enslaved or equalized these structures. Each has grown into its own way, unconcerned with the others, and their mixing is beautiful, like a mess in a great artist's studio.
