In the distant future, humanity has been enslaved by creatures from space that feed on life on Earth. The world is divided into Landfill - a dying civilization, and Zoosad - an artificially created nursery to maintain the life of people especially valuable to the colonialists. Alien beings who have never known creation are impressed by the human ability to create works of art and spread the "effect of life" to the inanimate.
