The monograph analyzes the foreign policy activities of one of the leading American politicians of the first half of the 19th century, Daniel Webster. Territorial expansion determined the main foreign policy "agenda" of the United States of the 1840s. It was Webster who laid the foundations of the foreign policy of the subsequent period, when commercial and industrial expansion replaced expansionism. He stood at the origins of the first US treaties with China, Japan and the Hawaiian Islands, in negotiations with Great Britain and in public speeches defended the right of the overseas republic to a place among the great powers, largely determining the directions and methods used by US diplomacy of the late XIX - XX centuries.
