The novel takes place at the beginning of the 19th century in England. The main character is the girl Anna Rochford from a respected and wealthy family. Being the only daughter, the girl from childhood was shrouded in immense love. But on one fateful day, Anna lost everything: her parents, home and fortune. The groom leaves her, because he wanted to marry for her wealth, and Anna's only relative, Aunt Amelia, does not feel proper love for her niece, making it clear that she is not pleasant in her house. But in the moment of final collapse, fate unexpectedly sends her a person in whom the girl will find a faithful, devoted friend and true love, thanks to whom she can survive. However, life is cruel, and even the softest and kindest person is forced to change his nature, to become different. Situations, circumstances and evil people sometimes force you to turn off the bright path. The most important thing in such moments is not to lose yourself.
