"Good Conquers Evil" by Sergei Sokolovsky is an artistic story about the paradoxes of stigma, written in 1995. Before you is its first edition. The heroes of the story are a company of young drug addicts, whose life is emphatically aestheticized, while the aestheticization itself is very ironic - the action takes place in Russia in the late 90s, but in such a Russia in which there was no revolution, and therefore no Soviet Union at all. Before us is not quite an alternative story - the author does not ask the question "what would happen if," but paints a parodically static Russia, a pre-revolutionary paradise, which suddenly clung to Russian mass culture - how delightful are evenings in Russia, champagne and the crunch of a French bun, pour glasses, Lieutenant Golitsyn, - with indispensable reasoning about the spiritual and fate of the homeland in grunge clubs or on kitchens.
