Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin (February 14, 1855 - April 5, 1888) was born on the estate Pleasant Valley of the Bakhmut district of Yekaterinoslav province. In 1874, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Real Gymnasium, he entered the Mining Institute. He began to print in 1876, made his debut with the essay "The True History of the Ensky Zemstvo Assembly." In 1877, with the outbreak of the Russian-Turkish war, he volunteered for the army, was wounded under Aslyar, and was promoted to officer; at the end of the war he was transferred to the reserve.
