In July 1932, a large, not quite ordinary ship departed from the berths of the Leningrad port. It was the first Soviet whaling base steamer Aleut, the flagship of the then newly organized Far Eastern whaling flotilla. In Kiel Bay, Aleut was supposed to meet three whalers and, crossing the oceans, sail to its destination - Vladivostok.
