The materials of this dictionary were collections of proverbs and sayings compiled by Burmese and Western philologists; some sayings and their variants are recorded by the compiler from Burmese informants. All sayings are arranged according to logical-thematic groups; within the group, following Burmese tradition, they are given in the order of the Burmese alphabet; each dictum is given in the original language with all marked lexical and grammatical variants. This is followed by its translation into Russian, the necessary historical, cultural and linguistic commentary (for example, an analysis of the structure of the proverb, an indication of the presence of alliterations, rhymes, the use of inverted phrases); for some sayings, the source of their origin is traced
