The book, written by the famous psychoanalyst and cinema theorist Viktor Mazin, is devoted to relations between Lacan and cinema, the analysis of individual films, as well as what the author calls "private cinema theory." The private theory of cinema emphasizes that there is no prior psychoanalytic methodology, that it fits together with the viewing and analysis of the film and, like the psychoanalytic case, is a unique singularity. The literary form of the book is based on the author's fantasy, according to which Lacan, together with the reader, is in an imaginary cinema, watching films and commenting on them. Comments are either statements about films that really impressed Lacan, for example, Chaplin's Monsieur Verdu or Oshima's Empire of Feelings, or they are appropriate quotes for those films that Lacan did not see, for example, We Fuck Alone by Gaspar Noe or Frankenstein's Army Richard Raphorsta.
