I. M. Filshtinsky is a famous orientalist, author of many works on Arabic history and literature. In his declining years, he talks about what he experienced during the years of repression, when he was sent to Stalin's camps on a denunciation. From most of the previously published camp memories, "We Walk Under Escort" is distinguished by the absence of revealing pathos. He paints the camp as a realm of tragic absurdity, in which, however, there is a place for love and compassion. Filshtinsky tells not so much about himself as about the people with whom fate confronted the young scientist in the Gulag. Each chapter of the book is essentially a whole novel, condensed to the volume of a novel.
