The project of a specialized destroyer for escorting strike aircraft carrier formations of the Japanese Imperial Navy was developed long before the triumphal march of Vice Admiral Nagumo's formation in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Appreciating the forecast of General W. Mitchell: "Superior air forces will dominate all the sea expanses," the Japanese were among the first to begin the project of a new type of ship - a specialized air defense destroyer that combines firepower with excellent seaworthiness and a huge range. Armed with phenomenal 100 mm guns, superior to all world analogues, and numerous anti-aircraft guns, these ships successfully debuted in September 1942, repelling the raid of American "flying fortresses." The Akizuki-class ships built according to the original project fully supported the high reputation of Japanese destroyers, although they could not fully realize themselves in the quality in which they were conceived and created.
