The novel "Elixirs of Satan" in a concentrated form embodies the complex philosophical and moral problems of German and - more broadly - European romanticism, an attempt to penetrate the depths of the subconscious sphere of the human psyche, to connect mental life of a single personality unique in its individuality with the objective world, with its biological and social laws.
