The situation in North Africa came to the attention of Adolf Hitler. The defeat in Africa threatened the very existence of the fascist regime of the Duce of the Italian nation Benito Mussolini, Hitler's main military-political ally in Europe. In October 1940, Major General Wilhelm von Thoma was sent to North Africa to study the current situation on the spot and develop measures to help the unlucky heirs of the Romans.
