During the reign of Prince Vladimir I Svyatoslavich, who received the name of the Saint in history, the lands of the Eastern Slavs united in the Kyiv principality. Territories on both sides of the Carpathians and Cherven cities in Volyn were also annexed to Russia. Vladimir chose Orthodox Christianity as the state religion of Kievan Rus.
