Operation Winter Magic was one of many Nazi punitive operations. However, there was also specificity: the main striking force here was not German units, but Latvian police battalions. In just a month and a half, punitive operations burned more than 430 villages, destroyed thousands of civilians and thousands were hijacked for forced labor. The collection published for the 70th anniversary of the end of the punitive operation is the most complete collection of documents from the archives of Russia, Belarus and Latvia on the preparation, progress and consequences of Operation Winter Magic to date. The collection also publishes for the first time lists of settlements destroyed by punishers.
