Based on the basic principles of electrodynamics, a self-consistent theory of excitation and coupling of waveguide modes has been developed, applicable to any (closed and open) waveguide structures. Waveguide structures containing media with isotropic, anisotropic and bianisotropic properties are considered. The consideration was carried out taking into account the dissipation of energy in these media.
