They were painted by Pushkin in 1830 in Boldin. Pushkin decided to print the story anonymously, with a preface "from the publisher," containing a biography of I.P. Belkin. At the end of October 1831, the book was published under the title "The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin, Published by A. P." With a full indication of the name of the author of Belkin's Tale, they were published only three years later.
