The evolution of ontogenesis is seen as a major problem in evolutionary developmental biology, as evolutionary transformations of organisms are driven by changes in their ontogenesis. The integration of current evidence and hypotheses of evolutionary developmental biology, developmental genetics, and comparative genomics with classical concepts of ontogenesis evolution provides new avenues for understanding individual developmental transformation mechanisms and differences in evolutionary strategy of different Metazoa taxa.
